Yesterday in Part I we discussed the unforuntate death of a Walmart employee who was trampled to death by stampeding shoppers. Walmart provided no security or crowd control to the mobs of shoppers who rushed the doors to get “Black Friday” bargains.
This photo was taken at the Valley Stream Walmart store shortly before the crowd broke through the doors.
A Queens City Councilman, James Gennaro, has proposed a “Doorbuster Bill” that would mandate proper security measures and crowd control for special events and sales which draw a large crowd. Retailers would liable for injuries that occur from a lack of crowd control. See New York Daily News story.
We applaud this bill which makes big box retailers act responsibly. It is eregious that a major retailer can profit from whipping-up consumer frenzy and crowds for “Black Friday” sales without providing minimal security and crowd control.
